Semi Fire Kills One Passenger

Posted: Updated:

Minot firefighters found a body inside a burning semi early this morning at a truck stop.

Last night, shortly after midnight, Amy Behm, the owner of Flying J Truck Stop received a call from her employee that a semi truck was on fire in the parking lot.

"The biggest issue was nobody really knew if there was somebody was inside," says Behm.

Behm's employee called 911 while another truck driver went to check on the semi. He asked another employee to get a fire extinguisher, but by the time they got out with one, the truck was already up in flames.

Moments later, multiple agencies arrived at the truck stop.

"There was a fear of the fuel tanks because it was parked amongst other semis, so a lot of the truck drivers were sleeping in there trucks and they were notified to move their vehicles and have them separated from the one was burning," says Steve Kukowski of the Ward County Sheriff's Department.

The fire department put out the fire, and a body was located in the sleeper area of the semi truck.

There is some speculation what could have caused the fire, but officers are still investigating, and the victims family has been notified.

"However, something of this magnitude, we contacted the Deputy State Fire Marshall and had him come down due to the fact there was a fatality involved in it. We felt it was best to get to the next level," says Rob Knuth of the Minot Rural Fire Department.

The next step for law enforcement is to interview witnesses and gather as much information as possible to try and determine where the fire started. And, for the employees at the Flying J, they're just trying to learn from this unfortunate situation.

"We have an employee meeting already scheduled, and we will discuss what happened, what they did right, maybe what could have been done faster. Those things to see improvement out of a bad situation," says Behm.

There were no other injuries or fatalities in the incident. Authorities are still working on determining what caused the fire.
