Pepper Spray Released at Minot YMCA

Posted: Updated:

A release of pepper spray left gym members out in the parking lot at the Minot YMCA.

The Minot Police Department and Fire Rescue were on scene trying to figure out where the chemical release was coming from. After further investigation, the chemical turned out to be pepper spray, which causes irritation of the throat and eyes.

The YMCA is unsure if someone intentionally sprayed it around the building or if it just went off in someone's purse.

"The oxygen level is great in the building. No chemicals are in the air, and there was no odor. That's one of the things about pepper spray. It's pretty well depleted," YMCA Director Roger Mazurek says.

No one was injured, and the building was closed for about an hour.
