Bismarck Family Shows Concern To Ukraine Crisis

Posted: Updated:

Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent troops to Ukraine, and Secretary of State John Kerry has gone over there as well. As things escalate some Bismarck residents are concerned.

A Bismarck family from Ukraine say the possibility of war concerns them, and they are worried about family still living in the country.

Peter Peterchuk came over from Ukraine more than 20 years-ago with his wife Vera and kids. He works in a legal office and also owns a sewing business with his wife.

Even though they're more than 5,000 miles from their native country, Ukraine is never far from his thoughts thanks to a Ukranian calendar that hangs in his office.

"This is for the month of January, and it is about boy carolers during the Christmas season," says Peter.

A happy reminder of his country during a not so happy time, as both he and his wife worry about what's going on with Russia and Ukraine.

"We don't know what's going on. We don't want war," says Vera.

Peter says things have gotten better for Christians in Ukraine since he left, but he is still worried that this latest incident could escalate.

"People from different countries are against Russia so they probably will have dire luck, and I hope there is no war in Ukraine," says Peter.

Instead he and his wife want a peaceful resolution to the conflict and are asking for prayers for their native land.

"May God take the situation under his control, and may God help people in Ukraine," he says.

But regardless of what happens in the coming days and weeks they will continue to honor their heritage with gentle reminders of home.

Both Peter and Vera say they continue to keep in touch with their family overseas and hope for a speedy resolution.
