South Heart Feels Oil Boom Effects

Posted: Updated:
Amara Littlefield is one of a handful of new faces in Mrs. Miller's fifth grade class. She says South Heart is a lot smaller than her old school.

They had more fifth grades, they had more teachers and stuff," says student Amara Littlefield.

But it might not be that way for long. The South Heart School District has grown about 30 percent over the past three and a half years.

"Smaller class sizes are of the past so you really have to adapt with where they are," says fifth grade teacher Leah Miller. "And I'm really noticing a lot of gaps in learning. We're not on the same page. Kids are losing skills in transition."

But the district has stayed ahead of the curve with space. It's added 10 modular classrooms over the past two years. Although school administrators say they aren't ruling out the possibility of a new school building.

"If the current numbers, what we're hearing from oil companies and so on, and just local people is if their numbers keep continuing to grow, we will have to do some expanding of our current facilities that we're in right now," says South Heart  Superintendent Riley Mattson.

The numbers are growing most in the younger grade levels. Of the 20 new students in South Heart this year, 19 of them are in the elementary school.

"I think right now we are okay. I believe as a district for, we hope for another year," says Mattson. "After that, we don't know. The biggest issue is that you know things are coming, but just not at what rate."

Superintendent Mattson says the district will probably meet with the community in the next few months to talk about the school's future.
