Snow Plow Operator Week

Posted: Updated:

While it may not be snowing right now, next week may be a different story. Governor Jack Dalrymple has proclaimed February 24-28 Snow Plow Operator Week in North Dakota.

In North Dakota...we're all too familiar with winter weather.  Snowy roads can mean difficult driving. But, there is a team of people waiting to meet Mother Nature when she acts up.

"We can run twelve to fourteen hour days," says Dale Sveen, the Department of Transportation Supervisor at the Minot section.

Working a snow plow is no Monday through Friday Job. Employees are always ready to take action. Plows are out on weekends and holidays, helping people get home safely.

"When we have a holiday and I get snow, I don't get the day off. People don't realize that's how you get to grandmas house. I'm cleaning the road for you," says Sveen.

Throughout winter, the Department of Transportation is constantly working to help people feel safe while driving.

Maintenance Superintendent of the Department of Transportation Minot section Monte Lee says they have one mission; to keep the roads open and ice free, and to try and provide a safe system for people to travel on.

While this job does mean long hours, the results seem to outweigh the work.

"It gives you a good feeling knowing people are going to be safe on the roads," Sveen says.

Snow plow operators also work as the departments eyes and ears on the road, reporting on actual conditions that are then put on to a travel information map.
