Firefighters Attend Training Session

Posted: Updated:

The60th annual FireSchool is in full swing at the AllSeasons Arena in Minot.

More than 850 firefighters are inattendance making this the largest training event of emergency servicespersonnel in the state.

They'llrisk their lives in order to save yours.

Whetherit's your basic kitchen fire or a large elevator fire, firefighters doeverything they can to get the victims out safely, even if that means puttingtheir own lives at risk.

Volunteerfirefighter, Josh Deike comes from a long line of firefighters. With hisgrandfather and father being in the business, he felt it was only right tofollow in their footsteps.

"Ijust find it hard not to help them, if they will help me," says volunteer firefighter JoshDeike.

Inorder to get the most up to date training, firefighterstraveled from all over to prepare for the unexpected.

"Itdoesn't matter if you fight one fire in a year or a 100 in year. The danger isthe same. It doesn't matter if you're working as a career firefighter or youare a firefighter in a small town of a 100 people. When that pager goes off andyou get called out the danger is the same," says Dan Fuller of theMinot Rural Fire Department.

To beas realistic as possible, instructors set up a trailer for their primary searchclass. When firefighters get inside, there is little to no visibility, and theirjob is to search for victims and get them out as quickly as possible.

"Theyhave it smoked where you can't see an inch in front of you. So, you really haveto train your brain to just feel your surroundings, and make sure you don't losewhere you're at in the building," says volunteer firefighter Brandon Hoffman.

Beingthrown into these life like situations gives them a really good sense of whatthey would be getting into when a real fire strikes.

Classes continue throughout the weekend.
