Board Chooses MSU President

TheState Board of Higher Education named Dr. Steven Shirley as the next presidentof Minot State University.

Shirleycurrently serves as the president of Valley City State University, a campus ofmore than 1,300 students and 190 faculty members.

The board met Thursday on campus to interview the threefinalists, but when it was all said and done, Shirley's knowledge of North Dakota's cultureand understanding of the university system ultimately separated him from therest of the candidates.    

"When we wentthrough our negotiations, it was a very positive environment.  All we did wasdiscuss the pros of each candidate and it ended up that Dr. Shirley's pros wonin the end," says chairwoman for the board Kirsten Diederich. 

"I'm so excited to be the next president," says Shirley. "This is a terrific campus, a wonderful community,and a lot of wonderful faculty, staff and students here. I'm just reallyexcited to get started and hit the ground running."

Shirley'sinitial contract is set for three years. He will take over as president in the summer of 2014.
