Health Department Investigates Illegal Dumping

Posted: Updated:

As North Dakota's oil industry increases their production, waste from fracking and other oil operations are becoming problematic.

State law prohibits companies from disposing of radioactive waste in the state, yet this past week the health department is investigating filter socks that were left on trailers south of Watford city. Filter socks are used to catch sediment and other rocks that could clog a well.

"As soon as we found out we had inspectors on site taking a look at it. And in a relative nature they looked at what the natural radioactive material was and that was in that 5 picocuries range. This material showed double that amount around 10 so it's very low doesn't pose a public health issue or risk," says David Glatt of Environmental Health.

Filter socks are supposed to be sent to a proper hazardous waste facility in Colorado, and the McKenzie county landfill has steep fines to deter illegal dumping. The landfill will charge $1,000 for each oil sock.
