Sanford Offers Knee Replacement Sessions

Posted: Updated:

Mark Hoff has had knee pain for nearly seven years, and he says mornings are usually the worst.

"It's stand up, hang on to the bed post for about 15 seconds, and just to kind of move it and get it a little bit limber," says knee replacement patient, Mark Hoff. "At this point I'm basically hobbling to the bathroom."

Because of the constant pain, Hoff's doctor suggested a total knee replacement. But prior to his operation, Hoff participated in group education sessions that prepared him for his procedure.

"We went through everything from weeks before the surgery, up until the week of the surgery-what to do on day-to-day basis," says Hoff.

The sessions are held at Sanford Health's Joint Replacement Center. They are led by therapists who cover everything from what to expect the day after surgery to what to anticipate once the patient gets home.

"It gives them a chance to voice any concerns or questions that they have even before they come up," says physical therapist, Jenny Silbernagel.

"They told us what to expect as far as during the day of surgery, and the days and weeks following surgery," says Hoff.

Teaching people before his surgery and letting them know what to expect after are crucial components in making patients like Hoff feel younger by tomorrow.
