North Dakota Tops Index

Posted: Updated:

Good news for North Dakotans, according to the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, North Dakota currently ranks number one in the country for well-being in 2013.

The state-level data is based on more than 178,000 interviews with adults from all 50 states from January-December of 2013.

The index scores states on a variety of areas including life evaluation, emotional health, work environment, physical health, healthy behaviors and access to basic necessities.

But, what do North Dakotans have to say about the recent poll?

"They found out a lot of times with tragedies and different things, you know, people will pull together to help someone in need," says North Dakota native Bernard Widdman. "So, I think the state is probably known for that more than a lot of other things.  It's a friendly state."

"In the warmer climates, you only have the same thing all the time here. You have something different.  There's a change that takes place and you go with them changes. You can go swimming in the summer, and you can go snow skiing in the winter," says North Dakota native Dean Lindgren.

South Dakota and Nebraska rounded out the top three states.
