Williston Airport Expands

Posted: Updated:

The Williston airport has continued to see a significant increase in passengers. Theairport has experienced a 29 percent passenger increase from 2013. As a result, airlines have added more incoming and outgoing flights. As the local air trafficcontinues to grow, employees at the are working hard to keep up.

Airport manager Steven Kjergaardsays the increase of travelers is very noticeable. He employed new staff members to keep up with the changes.

"We just continue to adjust.TSA has continued to add staff, I've added staff, both of the airlines haveadded staff. We've made it work with what we have," says Kjergaard.

Another change is travelers now haveto pay for parking at Sloulin. This was implemented to keep people from takingadvantage of the parking spaces in the lot and to generate funds for a futureairport renovation or expansion. The price has been set at $7.

"I would like to be able tohave people park for free, but realistically, people will take advantage ofthat. So, this isa fair compromise. We still match what Dickinsondoes per day. We are the last commercial service airport in North Dakota with more than athousand boarding's per month to switch to pay parking," says Kjergaard.

Staff members are also taking stepsto make the airport parking lot a safer environment.

"We are going to install extracamera systems this summer. That's going to be the biggest thing. My staff isalso increasing their patrols through, as well as the parking company doingextra patrols and lot checks," says Kjergaard.

Kjergaard advised travelers not toleave their cars unlocked, keys in the car or any valuables in sight because it leads to parking crimes.

The top destinations for North Dakota travelers are Las Vegas, Phoenix, Denver and Orlando.
