Rail Companies Improve Transportation Safety

Posted: Updated:

Rail companies are getting back on track after announcing industry changes to improve the safety of transporting Bakken crude.

BNSF announced that they will be adding 5,000 new cars with safety features to their fleet, and the Association of American Railroads mandates companies must add inspections, cut speed limits in metro areas and add more effective breaking systems. But the upgrades still need to be backed up by some form of federal regulation.

"We need modern regulations that recommend the various qualities that we're dealing with. The reason for that is it is hard to expect the investment community, the manufacturing community and the shippers community to build things to spec if these specs might be deemed out of compliance by future regulation," says Rep. Kevin Cramer.

The safety changes don't address construction standards for the type of crude cars which were involved in the derailment in Casselton last December, and the accident in Quebec.
