North Dakota Tops Happiness Poll

Posted: Updated:

North Dakota has the lowest unemployment rate and is the fastest growing state in the nation, and now we're on the top of yet another national list.

The Gallup poll shows that were number one for well being and happiness, rising from 19th place in 2012.

On a day like this you may think you would be happier in a warm tropical place like Hawaii. But a national poll shows the happiest state in the nation is actually right here in North Dakota.

"I've always liked it here. People seem for the most part to be a good bunch of people," says Bismarck resident George Reisnour.

For the poll more than 175,000 people on gave input on factors including work environment, financial security, emotional health and social and community factors.  And the state tourism director says most of those things that improve a persons quality of life are the same things that attract visitors.

"You know one example of that is golf. We have more golf courses per capita than any other state and we have the highest golf participation than any other state. So it's something everybody can do," says Sara Otte Coleman, tourism director.

She says the number one reason people come to the state is to be outside.

"Which surprises people, especially when the national media loves to show us on days like today when it's cold and snowy," says Coleman. But even year round people enjoy getting outside and that helps your outlook on life and wellness and all of those things."

Which is one of the things that most attracts citizens like Reisnour.

"I like Bismarck, I like North Dakota. I'm very outdoorsy so it helps, a lot of things to do in North Dakota," says Reisnour.

Trailing just behind North Dakota on the list is our neighbor to the South but Coleman hopes we can keep the lead over South Dakota when the results for 2013 are released next year.

On the bottom of the list is West Virginia, which ranked last in all the sub categories except for work environment.
