Museum Displays Historical Photographs

Posted: Updated:

In today's digital world, paper photographs that you can hold in your hand are pretty much a thing of the past. And the Dickinson Museum Center is converting some old negatives of southwest North Dakota's history and putting them online.

The Center is digitizing more than 100,000 pictures it has collected over the years. The project started about two years ago, and so far, volunteers and staff have put 5,000 pictures online. The photos are in print or negative form and some are even glass plates. Those working on the project say they are expecting it to last for at least another decade.

"It's one of those projects that looks at this point to be never-ending, but I think it's going to be a really exciting project as we uncover the images that people haven't seen in 50, 60 or even 70 years," says Dan Ingram, Dickinson Museum Coordinator.

Donations and volunteers from the community help support the project. For more information, visit dickinsonmuseumcenter.com/what-we-do/photo-digitization-project/.
