Crews Clean Up Cherry State Well

Posted: Updated:

A well that went out of control last Friday is being cleaned up after spilling 25 barrels of oil and 25 barrels brine.

The Cherry State well sprayed a mist into the air, covering some trees and brush on both sides of the creek, along with chunks of ice.

Much of what was impacted will be removed and disposed of at a special waste facility. The Department of Mineral Resources says pressure from the well caused one of three anti-blowout preventers to release oil into the air.

"We're still gonna have to go through a minute by minute review of the operation before during and after the blow out with the operator. And then take a look at what type if any environmental damage occurred and how long the well was out of control and that sort of thing," says Lynn Helms, Department of Mineral Resources.

Whiting Oil and Gas will submit an assessment and monitoring plan, and inspectors started cleaning the area after the well was under control.

We'll have more from the Health Department at 10.
