Senators Work to Protect Missile Silos

Posted: Updated:

Senators John Hoeven and Heidi Heitkamp are calling on the U.S. Department of Defense to follow federal law regarding missile silos at the Minot Air Force Base and nationwide.

Hoeven authored the provision in the Department of Defense appropriations bill that blocked the administration from eliminating operational U.S. nuclear missile silos.

Hoeven says none of the funds available to the DOD should be used to conduct any environmental impact analysis related to Minuteman III silos that contain a missile.

"Today, along with Senator Walsh of Montana, and Heitkamp of North Dakota, I wrote a letter to them saying 'this is the law, you cannot move forward with any kind if environmental impact statement as a step in the process to reduce silos - you have to keep the silos," says Senator Hoeven.

Recent reports have indicated that the Department may try to circumvent the federal law and begin a study.
