Jamestown Schools Face Deficit

Posted: Updated:

Big troubles for the Jamestown school district. It's facing a projected deficit of nearly $2 million for the next school year.

The problem is rapid enrollment increases. State funding is based on student population from the previous year, so the necessary money will eventually come, but it's lagging behind.

The district has made some changes to save about a million dollars, like cutting foreign language class and not replacing retiring teachers.

It's in the same boat with a lot of districts in western North Dakota, despite a surplus at the state level.

Jamestown's superintendent says he expects the school district to keep growing.
