Dual Credit Program Draws Students

Posted: Updated:

The population in the city of Williston continues to rise every year. This has affected different areas around town, including enrollment at Williston State College.

More students continue to go to Williston State College every year. The big surprise is it hasn't been strictly college students.

"Dual Credit is a program where students can take a college course. This includes sophomores, juniors and seniors in high school," says Kari Rustand. "Once they complete the course, they have the option to receive a high school credit in addition to the college credit."

The executive director for Extended Learning Kari Rustand says since the school started the dual credit program more people are attending school. The amount of students that are involved in this program has increased by about 34 percent.

"It tends to be juniors and seniors," says Rustand. "Mainly because with dual credit, they actually have to receive permission from their high school counselor or administrator to take the course. We don't just let any high school student come in and take the course."

There is also more students in the dual credit program this spring than the past ones. The more knowledge people gain about this program, the more students will be involved. The numbers have also went up with the amount of college students attending.

"We have seen this spring our fourth largest enrollment on record, which is really great because a lot of people think about fall as the primetime for enrolling," says Kayla McKeil. "Fall is associated with school, and really spring is a great time to start as well."

The director of marketing Kayla McKeil says that anytime is a good time to attend as long as it best fits with the student.

"I really think our enrollment will continue to increase," says McKeil. "It might see larger jumps in certain years. We are going through a renovation."

McKeil says the ongoing renovation hasn't affected the enrollment so far, and it will be finished about this time next year.

McKeil added the amount of students this semester hasn't been too much for the school to handle. The school usually has more students in the fall.
