Williston Rent Highest In Nation

Posted: Updated:

People who live in Williston or are looking for a place to live there, already know how much rent can be. And now, we've learned it's the highest in the country.

Apartment Guide did a study and found the most expensive apartments aren't in New York or Los Angeles, they're actually in Williston, North Dakota.

Many residents who aren't working in the oil field struggle to pay the staggering rent prices.

"People come into Williston looking for work and everything. But, finding a place to live and to make any longevity out of it isn't there," says Roger Flack, Williston resident.

Others look to family members and friends for help during these times of uncertainty.

"Right now, I have family living with me that are old enough to be on their own, but they can't because of how much it costs. Its crazy," says Margaret Pomeroy, Williston resident.

Mayor Ward Koeser hopes this national news story about the housing situation will grab the attention of state officials

"We are always having the challenge of convincing the Govenor and the Legislature, when we give you numbers, we are serious about that," says Mary Koeser. "We are not making these numbers up. Sometimes in the session, they're like it isn't that bad, is it? Here, we have an outside source coming in and saying, 'hey guys, the most expensive apartments in the nation are in Williston, North Dakota.'"

Koeser was not surprised Williston snagged the number one spot on the list, as it is the fastest growing micropolitan city in the nation. As a result, it is hard to get housing and apartment complexes built quick enough.

Apartment Guide says the current average price of a one bed room apartment is $2,394  a month.
