Industry Commits to Sandpiper Project

Posted: Updated:

Oil producers and marketers have signed long-term commitments to ship Bakken crude through what will be the longest pipeline in the state.

The Sandpiper project under Enbridge Energy will move crude through 600 miles of pipe across North Dakota and Minnesota. Shipping companies have committed to sending 155,000 barrels each day down the line, which are crucial to financing pipelines.

"This is the single largest pipeline in development right now for North Dakota. Again this is going to add that additional pipeline capacity that we need going forward. As we continue to rise our production levels we need that adequate means of transportation to move that crude to markets around the U.S.," says Justin Kringstad, N.D. Pipeline Authority.

Earlier this month, we reported on two other North Dakota pipeline projects that failed due to a lack of interest from shippers. The public service commission has hearings on the pipeline later this week, in Grand Forks, Devils Lake and Minot.
