Dispatcher Wins Award For Dedication

If you've ever been in an emergency you may have needed to call 911. And it's important the person on the other end of the call is able to help get assistance for you as quickly as possible.

For nearly six years Brandy Jensen has been answering calls that come into the state dispatch, helping people in central and western North Dakota.

"We dispatch for 24 of the 53 counties. We do 911 for all 24, we do law enforcement, ems, fire, we page them out, dispatch them,  talk to them over the radio and give them the info after we get the call," says Jensen.

With so much to do it's not surprising it can take time for a new employee to learn the ropes.

"We always say it takes about five years to learn the job and Brandy learned it in short order," Jensen's supervisor Brian Sauter.

She was quickly assigned additional tasks, which she took on without complaint.

"She's one of those people that shows up early for work. She'll stay late if she has to. She's always is willing to help with whatever she can do," he says.

All of which led to her being nominated and winning the state dispatcher of the year award.

"I didn't think it was going to be me by any means. I was like, 'I don't know who it will be, I think it will be this person' and then it was me, so I was surprised," says Jensen.

But she says she can't take all the credit. When a call comes in everyone does his or her part in making sure the caller gets the necessary assistance.

"I mean we all work together, and we all do the same kind of stuff. We're a team. We wouldn't work if we didn't work together."

Some of the additional work Brandy has been assigned to do includes managing a unit book with more than 4,000 call signs for the Highway Patrol and Game and Fish.
