When companies use hydraulic fracturing to get oil out of the ground, it often involves, water, sand and a mixture of chemicals. But the EPA has issued new guidelines regarding the use of diesel fuels when fracking.
The new rules have taken 2 years to complete, and the Department of Mineral Resources says that in that time, companies in the Bakken have eliminated the use of different grades of diesel fuel in their fracking mixture.
"We don't anticipate that we're gonna end up with any kind of sign slow down in North Dakota as a result of this new guidance. And we don't anticipate that we are going to need to take action anytime soon if ever in the legal realm," says Lynn Helms, Department of Mineral Resources.
If companies use even a small percentage of diesel fuel in their frack mixture, they must apply for a underground injection permit which can add over 70 days to the permitting process.
