Family Moves For African Mission

Posted: Updated:
A hundred thousand orphans live on the streets of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Half of the children there will never attend school and one in six children die before their fifth birthday. Sobering statistics, but one Bismarck family is doing their best to change those odds.

The Gilliss family is moving to Africa. The family is going on a year long mission to teach English and work with children and women at risk.

"Just to help where we can help we're called to not sit  back and be comfy here in our house and think, 'Oh that's too bad.' If we can go and make a difference for two or three people, that's worth it," says Kasey Gilliss.

The Gilliss' have already adopted three kids from Ethiopia, and they sponsor a few financially. Seeing their progress is worth giving up most of their worldly possessions.

"It's all just stuff, easy to let go because it's just stuff. We can always buy another couch.  Knowing people are there for them is the biggest thing," says Kristen Gilliss.

Getting the trip for 7 organized is quite the process. Passports, paperwork and of course packing. They've done it before and even with all the poverty, there's something pulling them to help and they'll probably go again.

"The poverty is severe. You see the children and parents sleeping on the streets, but despite al of that, they are thankful. And 18:41 love comes in and makes it all better," says Kristen.

The Gillissis' will be in Africa for at least a year and the mission could possibly extend to 2019.
