Sleep Conditions Cause Heart Stress

When we talk about National Heart Month, sleep doesn't usually come to mind. But perhaps it should.

It's all about getting the right amount of rest. Researchers have found that there is a link between sleep and heart disease. Not getting the right amount of sleep can change the variability in heart rate, which can increase blood pressure.

And sleep specialists also say even though not getting enough sleep won't give you heart disease, sleeping less than six hours a night can cause some serious stress on the heart.

"Decreased sleep can increase your CRP, which is your C-Reactive Protein, which is usually released when there's stress or inflammation. And that increase in CRP can also be a sign of cardiovascular disease," says Karla Smith, St. Alexius Sleep Center.

Studies have also shown that people who leave a sleep condition untreated can cause the same cardiovascular damage as people with diabetes.
