Students Celebrate Fruits and Veggies Week

Posted: Updated:

Getting your kids to eat vegetables is nothing short of a miracle. Studies show kids aren't eating enough. That's why Bismarck Public School nurses came up with Fruits and Veggies week.

Each day is a different color and students are invited to wear the colors and learn about the benefits of the colored fruit or vegetable.

It's yellow and orange day and Northridge Elementary's Ava and Graham are wearing yellow. Graham's a man of fashion.

"I like the part because you get to pick your own shirt you get to wear. And some days you get to wear red, pink, purple, tomorrow we're gonna wear blue and purple," says Graham Tollefson.

Whereas, Ava likes learning about their different benefits.

"The carrot helps you see better, and I think it was the peaches, or something, that make your hair thick," says Ava Ruscheinsky.

Learning about fruits and vegetables doesn't just happen in the classroom. The lunchroom labels the produce and explains their benefits.

Each class is competing this week to see who's the healthiest. So, on top of wearing the color of the day, doing different activities like fruit and veggie bingo or worksheets, students are asked to bring the same color food for snack.

"Kids aren't getting their daily requirements of fruits and vegetables. So, we're making a big deal about snacks because if they bring it as a snack, it helps them meet their daily requirement," says school nurse Michelle Dever.

The class with the most students eating fruits and vegetables by the end of the week, wins the Apple Award.

Tomorrow is the last day for Fruits and Veggies week,  the colors are purple and blue. I thought of a few snack ideas for students: Eggplant, blueberries, grapes, plums and raisins.
