Initiative Invests In Rural America

Posted: Updated:

February 7 marks the signing of the 2014 Farm Bill. That bill authorizes $956 Billion to fund agricultural and food policy programs. February 7 also marks the start of another new nation-wide initiative.

The Made in Rural America Export and Investment Initiative is a new effort to bring federal resources together with small business owners across the country. Over the next nine months, the Federal Rural Council will work with a handful of organizations to host five regional forums aimed at promoting rural exports and providing the opportunity to connect major investors with rural business leaders.

"Ten or 15 years ago, to be thinking about operating in the global environment you had to be a fortune 100 company and you had to have these teams of attorneys and all these other people.  Now, in what we're calling globalization 3.0, coined by Thomas Freidman, individuals and small businesses can compete globally. And that's fantastic," says John Girard, a business professor at Minot State University.
