Nedrose School Looks to Expand

Posted: Updated:

In a little over one week, residents in the Nedrose School District will decide the future of their school.  On February 20th, Nedrose will hold a vote for an $18 Million Bond issue that would address over-crowding in their classrooms.

"This Western part of the State especially, has had such an influx of population, and schools all over are faced with the same dilemma we are: find space and taking care of our kids," stated Nedrose School District Superintendent Chuck Miller.  Like most North Dakota schools, Nedrose Elementary in Minot is growing.  There are 310 students enrolled at their school, that's about 50 students over the building's capacity.  School staff has had to get creative in finding space for students.  "We bought two portables which gave us four additional classrooms, and our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades are all out in those at this time.  We have also made use of every possible corner of the school, and we've had to.  We've got classes that are being held in the lunch room, the hallways, all sorts of places just to make things work for this year," Miller added.

But on February 20th, things could change.  Voters will be asked to approve an $18 Million Dollar bond issue that would go towards a new 80,000 square foot middle and high school building located near the upcoming 55th Street Housing Development.  That building would have the space for an additional 360 students.  If things go well, they plan on being in their new school building by the fall of 2015.

Right now, Nedrose School pays tuition to send students to Minot and Surrey High Schools.  This year, about 140 students.  In 2012, The School District paid close to $900 Thousand Dollars in tuition fees.  "By putting up our own building, it is a cost-savings.  The more kids we get, if we have to contract with Minot and Surrey, we'll see that tuition cost go higher and higher and higher.  Whereas if we have our own building, we're able to take care of those kids ourselves," Miller said.

If the Bond is passed, the School District's mill levy would increase by 10 mills and would cost the owner of a $100 Thousand Dollar Home an additional $50 Dollars per year.  But according to Miller, now is the time to act, "I think we've done a good job of taking care of our kids this year.  Obviously we don't want to have to do this long-term, and that's why we're looking for solutions in the form of building."

The February 20th Bond Issue requires a 60 percent or greater approval to pass.  Ballots will be open 11:00 AM to 8:00 at the Nedrose School.
