Capitol Cafeteria Gets Renovation

Posted: Updated:

The six month, $1.1 million renovation starts on Monday and the last remodel was done in 1981. And the Capitol Grounds Facilities Director says the changes are needed.

"The most important part I think is we're gonna add additional cash registers and that we are going to start accepting debit and credit cards," said John Boyle.

The cafeteria serves around 400 people every day. Most people visit during the lunch rush.
Boyle says they make 40 percent of their biennial sales during legislative sessions, and that keeps their two registers busy.

"The lines get backed up, so we're kind of hoping with the new remodeling that we're going to be able to get people through the line a lot faster," said Tyler Borstead, Food Services Director.

The remodeling should be done by August, and for the time being, food services will just be a short elevator ride away.

"There's a nice view up top on the 18th floor, so we can take in a little scenery, and there's not very many windows right now in the kitchen, that's going to be nice," said Borstead.

The State Legislature appropriated the money for the remodel during the last legislative session. Borstead says the new cafeteria will also have a deli and pizza station, along with more seating.
