Police Offer Tips To Avoid Robbery

Posted: Updated:

The Williston Police Department works tirelessly to keep civilians safe and battle crime in town. But, there are a few simple steps you can take to protect yourself from being a victim of theft.

A poorly locked storage unit is an ease for robbers. And stealing from storage units is one crime that is becoming more common.

"We've had issues with the burglaries of storage units and storage facilities for the past couple years. But, it seems recently we've seen a dramatic increase in storage unit burglaries and reported theft from storage units," says Williston detective David Peterson.

While thefts from storage units is becoming more and more prevalent, there are easy ways to help ensure your valuables are safe.

"The police department would like to come out and ask the people, who are using storage units, to secure a lot of their valuables by purchasing a really heavy duty lock. This helps because the actual mechanism is guarded in a shroud. And it's hard for bolt cutters to be utilized to cut that lock," says Peterson.

There also has been a spike of crime in the Williston Sloulin Airport parking lot. Once again, just a few steps and some common sense can help deter criminals.

"It is a crime of opportunity. If the opportunity presents itself, they will commit the crime. We encourage people to remove valuables from the vehicle, if they're utilizing that parking facility at Sloulin field. Also, don't store those keys in gas caps, tool boxes, anything of that nature. Just remove the keys," he says.

Peterson also recommends calling the police department if you see any suspicious or unusual activity in the parking lot.
