Florists Prepare for Valentine's Day

Posted: Updated:

From greeting cards and candy, to jewelry and flowers, Valentine's Day is one of the biggest gift-giving holidays of the year. The National Retail Federation expects the average shopper to spend about $134 on their loved one this year.

Phones have been ringing off the hook all day at Artistic Ambiance in Minot.

"It's a very busy time," says Tammy Holen, Artistic Ambiance owner. "It's an extremely busy."

With Valentine's Day just four days away, floral shops have been busy unloading trucks, pre-cutting and arranging flowers in preparation for the big day.

"This is the busiest day because everyone wants it on Valentine's Day," says Holen.

According to a recent survey by the National Retail Federation, about 54 percent of consumers plan to celebrate the romantic holiday this year.

"Most every guy the first thing out of their mouths is usually roses, a dozen roses sent out," says Holen.

Last year, Artistic Ambiance actually ran out of flowers. But, this year, they ordered more to hopefully meet the demand of all customers.

"We had guys coming in at the end of the day and we were completely sold out," says Holen.  "So pre-order. Stop at your flower shop beforehand and get it booked."

While most gift-givers plan to buy candy and greeting cards for their sweetheart, 37 percent of people say they will be ordering flowers this Valentine's Day. For North Dakota residents, the average price for a dozen roses and delivery is about $100.

"It's always a big smile," says Holen. "Usually, then, everyone in the office or where it goes is jealous."

While it's only Monday, they're not wasting any time to get started on their growing season.

"We're kind of like a farmer," says Holen.  "This is our crop season and we got to produce it and get it out and try to make everybody happy."

Artistic Ambiance will have a full staff working on February 14, including 5-6 extra trucks for the morning delivery rush.
