Farmers Pleased With Bill

Posted: Updated:

Many North Dakota farmers and ranchers are pleased after President Obama signed the new Farm Bill yesterday, especially those who lost cattle during October's winter storm.

The bill includes a livestock indemnity program that will provide assistance to ranchers who lose livestock during a disaster. The relief includes any event after October 2011. And although direct payments have been removed, officials say it turned out well for North Dakota farmers and ranchers.

"I think the farm bill was as good as we could get our of this current feeling that exists in Washington, it's been two and a half years since we've had the expiration of the Farm Bill and unfortunately there's been some hard fought battles," says Agriculture Commissioner, Doug Goehring.

Goehring says that it took a lot of compromise to reach an agreement between southern and Midwest farmers.
