Energy Industry Helps Keep Unemployment Rate Low

Posted: Updated:

For a second straight month, there's concern that the U.S. Economy might be slowing after a strong finish to 2013.

The U.S. Labor Department released their monthly job report Friday morning. It showed that employers added just 113,000 jobs in January, that number is far below the average monthly gain of 194,000 last year.

However, things in North Dakota are different. The strong economy and booming oil and energy industry have created many new jobs.

"We started in the 90's targeting industries. Jerry Chavez has been a leader in that. We continue to look at what industries fit North Dakota, and what industries fit Minot, and they're changing," says Dr. Tom Seymour, Business Professor at Minot State University.

It was the second straight month that national job growth came in below economists' expectations. The unemployment rate however, did drop a tenth of a percent to 6.6, the lowest it's been since 2008.
