Second Time's a Charm

Posted: Updated:

It is now official, Minot Public Schools will ask voters to pass a revised school bond issue in the coming months.  The Minot Public School Board approved a motion to move forward with a scaled down $40 Million bond to address the most immediate needs.

About $4 Million would go towards security upgrades at all Minot Public School Buildings.  That includes cameras, buzzers, and security vestibules at main entrances.  The remaining money would be used for building additions, remodeling, and the construction of a new 510 student Elementary school in Southeast Minot.

"The general idea behind this is now portable classroom are now the exception and not the rule.  As we look forward at the anticipated growth we're seeing, as we look forward to our numbers continuing to grow, where do we stop buying portable classrooms?  I think the board has been very adamant about the fact that we're done buying portable classrooms.  Let's get our kids into bricks and mortar buildings," stated Mark Vollmer, Superintendent for Minot Public Schools.

A vote for the bond referendum will be held April 8th at the Minot Auditorium.  If the new bond issue is passed by voters, School District residents who own a $200,000 home would see a monthly tax increase of about $10.
