BSC Prepares Grads for the Work World

Posted: Updated:

It turns out some of today's college graduates aren't very employable. Recent studies say Generation Y grads aren't seen as career ready. They lack professionalism and communication skills.

It's no secret that today's graduates are tech savvy. But employers says that's nothing if they don't have the proper communication skills to back it up.

A 2013 study by Millennial Branding says recent college grads lack professionalism and interpersonal skills.

Students looking to avoid this stigma take classes that teach the right skills for the work force.

"Hard work pays off and it defines a person, defines your character. I think our parents taught us. A handshake is worth everything and the employer will see that," says BSC student Alex Preszler.

"What job do you have that you don't have to interact with another person? I think there's very few of those out there. That's how I try. I try to reform that for them so that they start to thinking, maybe I do have to interact with other people. I do need these skills," says Jay Meier, BSC.

Learning how to communicate face to face is very important. In some instances it may even cost you a job.

"We've actually had situations where an employee will have a conflict with someone, whether it's a supervisor or co-worker and instead of dealing with it they just leave," says owner Dakota Staffing owner Jim Fettig.

Research show students who know how to work well with technology and others have a better chance of getting hired.

Any student looking to improve their communication skills, BSC is hosting a job fair next Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m.
