Digital Eye Strain Becomes More Common

Posted: Updated:

With the increase of technology our lives have become much more digital. It's rare to find an adult or child who doesn't come into contact with desktop and laptop computers, smart-phones, and e-readers regularly.

Digital eye strain is becoming more prevalent.

"Sometimes my eyes get blurry from my iPhone and iPad," says Adrian Parks.

Digital eye strain is the temporary discomfort that follows from two or more hours of digital device use.

"There's more time spent on computers and cell phone. Everyone is looking at something all day everyday. So there's a larger volume of time and decreased blinking," says Optometrist Dr. Brad Schimke. "There are more symptoms affecting kids, adults, everybody."

Although the risk of permanent vision damage is low, symptoms such as dry or irritated eyes, blurred vision, eye fatigue, back or neck pain and headaches may have you feeling uncomfortable for a while. There are ways to protect yourself.

The most potential long term problem is eye dryness, which is harder to treat on people who already have chronic dry eyes.

For Parks he's already taking preventative measures. He says he already has special lenses on his glasses to prevent the glare.

You can also practice the '20-20-20' rule.

Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something that is 20 feet away.

During this digital era, it's important to remember to take breaks.
