Bismarck Named for Lowest in Unemployment

Posted: Updated:

North Dakota led the country in a few categories last year, like best state for young people and highest population growth. And a new statistic has Bismarck as number one.

The city was named for the lowest unemployment rate in the nation by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In November Bismarck's unemployment rate was 2.3 percent, while the national average is about three times that at seven percent. Job Service North Dakota says the diverse and growing economy keep the numbers low, and there's still about 3,000 open jobs between Burleigh and Morton counties. Which is causing staffing problems in a number of industries.

"It's pretty much all over the spectrum, and almost every industry comes to us, whether it's construction, legal  or some of the energy companies. Everybody is short of help," says Jim Fettig, Dakota Staffing Services.

Fargo comes in at a close second for the nations lowest unemployment rate at 2.6 percent.
