Oilfield Wives and Girlfriends Create Support Group

Posted: Updated:

While many move to Williston for work, they quite often leave behind their families, friends and life as they know it. Oilfield Wives and Girlfriends was formed as an effort to meet new people. But now, these ladies now see each other as family.

Shaleena Layton is a member of the original six, the founders of the group back in 2009. She believes this support group can help make the adjustment of the move to Williston easier.

"It helps make the transition easier. A lot of people message the Facebook page before they even come out. They get a little information about what the town is about, it just makes the transition a little easier," says Layton.

Members Daniela Carter and Heidi McCormick are grateful for the opportunity to have the support of the group. They see these women as their family away from home.

"I've met a lot of girls. I didn't know anyone before I moved here, and since I've joined the group I've met all these girls, and then from other groups you just meet other girls. It's kind of like your family here because I don't have anyone. It's been nice," says Daniela Carter.

"We just provide the opportunity, you know, so you can go out and have fun, have friends, have support if you need anything. If you're sick or you need someone to watch your kids or you just want to go shopping. Whatever it is, it's nice to have that, it's important," says Heidi McCormick.

While oil is what brought many of these ladies together, anyone is welcome at their weekly coffee dates, girl's night outs and fundraiser events.

"My husband actually no longer works in the oil field, so our name is more of what has brought us together. But, it's not limited to oil field wives or girlfriends, it's for anyone who wants to get involved," says Nicolette Sprague.

The women participate in many philanthropic endeavors, including supporting the March of Dimes and Relay for Life. Their Black and White Ball is approaching on March 22 and they're currently putting together a cookbook.

"You kind of can get stuck in a rut with recipes, it's always the same thing. We all want new recipes. It's hard to know when you just get a cookbook what's good," says McCormick.
