Farmers and Ranchers Meet for Annual Meeting

Posted: Updated:

You can't control the weather.

But, it's the weather that controls how farmers and ranchers handle their business.

Today, The Ward County Agricultural Improvement Association met in South Minot for their annual meeting to prepare for the spring season.

It may be the dead of winter outdoors, but indoors farmers and ranchers are gearing up for the growing season.

The annual meeting is a way to get farmers, ranchers and Ag businessman in a room together to discuss the latest in agriculture.

Topics discussed today range from nitrogen updates, seed increase as well as managing weather risks.

"Last year was a rough year for producers about half of the county didn't get planted due to wet spring," says Paige Brummund, NDSU Extension Agent.

While you can't 100 percent predict or control the weather, Professor of Atmospheric Science, Leon Osborne says it's important to always plan ahead.

"We're not going to stop preventive planning because we don't have that much control over the weather, but it's more from the standpoint can we get advanced information as to what the conditions might that would permit some decision making with regards to insurance or the types of crops, the timing as to when you might put crops in," says Osborne.

"Whether it's wheat, durum, barley, oats, we do a lot of crops such as peas and lentils. We also talk about things like flax, canola, and sunflowers. So, again Ward County is just really diverse in what we can grow," says Brummund.

So diverse that we can only hope that these educational seminars can help combat North Dakota's unpredictable weather.
