Inside Business: Carden Custom Framing

Posted: Updated:
Digital photography has become the new "norm." But sometimes, you just want to hold a photo in your hands.

Carla Leingang and her late husband Dennis started Carden Custom Framing 25 years ago, after learning the ins and outs of the framing business while working for other businesses.

"My husband Dennis and I started our company in 1989." says Carla, "So, we've been in business for 25- years-now."

Leingang says her customers frequently think outside the box when it comes to items they want framed. "We do a lot of shadow boxes, a lot of jerseys, memorabilia, anything from family photos to prints people pick up on vacation," says Carla.

Computerized mat cutters have replaced hand cutters, but there are still some parts of the framing business that are best done the old-fashioned way, by hand.

"It's pretty much a vice, glue and nails," she says.

Leingang says, that even in the age of social media and the internet, her business continues to thrive because people still want their memories framed, so that they can hang them on the wall and enjoy them anytime. "They want to look at a memory from a vacation, family photographs, military pictures or mementos that are special to them and they want to frame."

And, like anything having to do with decorating, the mat and frame styles, colors and textures are constantly evolving.

"The trends are always changing as far as, the biggest seller right now would be black molding. But we go through periods were golds are popular, silvers, whitewash woods, but right now the trend is black."

Carden Custom Framing draws business primarily from the Bismarck-Mandan and surrounding area, but they have repeat customers as far as Iowa and Texas.
