Do It Yourself with Ace Hardware

Posted: Updated:
In this weeks "Do it Yourself" segment, Jeff Hinz from Kirkwood Ace Hardware tells us how to change and clean your shower heads and also fills us in on some alternatives.

So, remember when you are buying a shower head, buy a good old American shower head that fits half inch pipe thread, and you can buy any shower head you want and it will match.

Most of the shower heads have a flat side so you can get a wrench on. Some of them don't, and if that's the case, you may have to put a rag around it to get it off. The reason for replacing the shower heads is, generally there are some minerals on the shower head. You can use CLR, or what we like to use at the store is a product called Santeen. It's a little stronger. But I will warn you, if you have a nice finished shower head, you don't want to do this because it will ruin the finish. Just pour some in a bucket and let it soak.

Replacing that shower head is pretty easy, and the one that we are going to use is one that a lot of people look for. It comes with a hose so it can extend. Just take some pipe thread tape and wrap it around the pipe and screw on the bracket. Then take more pipe thread tape and wrap around the connecting pipe.

As for hoses, they are all universal, so they all fit on half inch pipe. And check this out, remember the old Black and Decker snake lights, someone figured out how to do it with a shower head. You can buy extensions to bring the shower head lower, there are "S" shaped contraptions that will either make the head higher or lower. And then there are oversize shower heads, like this one, that spread the water out to make it feel like it's raining.

These are all things you can do yourself.
