Bobby Vee Releases Anniversary Album

Posted: Updated:

His music career spans several decades, yet Fargo Native Bobby Vee still has something to sing about.

His music career started from a tragedy, and 55 years after the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, Bobby Vee is releasing a new album.

February 3 of 1959 has often been referred to as the day the music died, but later that night a 15-year-old named Robert Velline from Fargo stepped on stage to take Holly's place.

And 55 years later after hits such as "Take Good Care of My Baby,"  "Rubber Ball," and "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes," Bobby Vee is releasing a new record.

Alzheimer's disease forced Vee to stop performing in 2011, but his son Jeff says music has remained a staple for the family over the past few years.

"Shortly after Dad's diagnosis we got together really all sort of stunned and in disbelief. We tried to figure out how to deal with this situation and information," says Bobby Vee's son Jeff Vee.

And so they gathered in the recording studio, with each family member contributing to the album.

"We continued to make music, and it was important to us to take our situation and make the most of it and to do the best possible things," he says.

The 18 track record entitled the "Adobe Sessions" features new material, and many of the families old favorite songs.

"Without any kind of agenda or plan we just went in and recorded songs. Songs we grew up with, songs that we all liked and songs that had specific memories, it's like a family scrapbook in a way," he says.

The record has a loose jam session feel with little enhancements, something Jeff says is going back to his father's North Dakota roots.

"I think it's kind of ironic you know Dad started at a garage in Fargo North Dakota and all these years later he's kind of finished in a garage," Vee says.

The album also includes Bobby's cover of Bob Dylan's "The Man in Me". Dylan was actually hired by Bobby to play piano for his band, when Dylan was going by the name of Elston Gunn. The Adobe Sessions is available today, and you can find out more at Bobby Vee's website.
