BackPack Program Feeds Students

Posted: Updated:

A new program in Dickinson Public Schools is making sure children aren't going hungry on the weekends.

Dickinson BackPack provides meals and snacks for students who don't have enough to eat outside of school. Organizers collect food at St. John's Lutheran Church and put the backpacks together, bringing them to schools on Friday mornings. Counselors at the elementary schools then discretely put them into children's lockers, so other children don't know who is getting the packs.

"The goal of the program is just so kids don't have to be hungry during the weekends and they'll come back to school on Mondays more ready to learn," says Kristin Seaks, Dickinson schools social worker.

Right now, more than 120 students receive the backpacks, which contain six meals and snacks.
