Employers Look For Tech Savvy Employees

Posted: Updated:

With so many jobs available in North Dakota and not enough people to fill them, job seekers can often take their pick. But there's still competition for the best jobs, and it takes more than just a clean resume.

I've heard time and time again, the best way to soar above the rest, no matter your job preference, is to create a personal internet brand.

With a state unemployment rate of three percent, help wanted signs are everywhere and staying there. So, if you're looking for your first job or the next step in your career, you don't have to look hard.

Potential employers say when applying for the job you really want, having a personal branding is the way to go.

"Use the web to kinda bring some attention to yourself. The job search might actually take care of itself," says todaymade founder Garrett Moon.

The founder of the web based company, todaymade says your page should be created around the job you're applying for.

The website mogul of Strikingly.com says making your own website or blog is easy and in most cases free.

"One of the most important things you probably need to set up is the homepage. Like a personal homepage. It's sort of like your business card or your resume," says Chen, Strikingly.com.

Employees at Dakota Staffing Solutions say many companies are moving away from paper resumes and in person interviews.

"We're seeing a lot more, let's call them, unsolicited resumes. Where people are just sending resumes through the website or sending them to our email addresses," says owner Jim Fettig.

Sometimes you don't have to look for the for hire signs. Companies may even be looking for you.

"We like to see things like a blog or things that you're talking about on social media. Are you doing things to kind of immerse yourself in the profession that you're seeking the job in?" says Moon.

Chen says 56 percent of potential employers think personal websites are a powerful job searching tool.

There's nothing wrong with having a paper resume as a back up. Branding yourself professionally on the Internet can put you on the fast track to the job you really want.
