MDU Strives to Reduce Flaring with Pipeline

Posted: Updated:

A new $650 million natural gas pipeline could reduce flaring in Western North Dakota.

The Dakota pipeline designed by MDU Resources and WBI Energy has the potential to transport 400 million cubic feet of gas which is 40 percent of the gas produced in the state.

The route will begin in North Easy McKenzie county, and connect to a station called Emerson in Minnesota. It then connects to three other pipelines. The company says this can reduce flaring in the Bakken region.

"I think this is definitely part of the puzzle as you've phrased it. In the fact that this will help get that gas to markets. Markets whether it be in North Dakota, or going east of here into Minnesota, Wisconsin or Michigan," says MDU Resource president, David Goodin.

"It's all about getting the gas in gathering lines, moving it to these large pipelines and processing plants, and eventually off to market. It's really more a matter of logistics than anything else. We almost have the capacity in place today, but we have to master the logistics of getting it to market," says Governor Dalrymple.

The pipeline is now in open season, which means WBI Energy and MDU are open to commitments from natural gas plants and other suppliers to then use the pipe. The companies say construction can start in late 2016, with a tentative service date of late 2017.
