Sunrise Purchases Nooks for Students

Posted: Updated:

Sunrise Elementary has advanced the school with new technology. Nooks are now available in the library. It's the first Bismarck public school to make e-readers available to all grades for school use.

Students just started using them earlier this month and the librarian says she's not surprised with how much they already know. But impressed with how much they've learned thus far.

Students were very excited and a little nervous about the 25 state of the art HD Nooks .

"I was like kinda both, because I was excited that we gotta use Nooks. Then I was like uhh, how about if I'll drop it, and like falls off the table, or something like that," says fourth grader, Emily Daner.

But you have to do more than drop it. These e-readers are child friendly with protective cases and applications for educational entertainment. But the Nook is not all fun and games.

"We need to find that balance. And part of it is introducing it in a school setting where we can teach them how to be responsible with the technology," says Library Media Specialist, Lesley Gunderson.

Kindergarten through second grade have more books available to them on the Nooks. Third through fifth graders are doing a research project about the Nook itself.

Allowing students to learn more than just how to play games. But not everyone is completely sold on them.

"Well, it doesn't really matter. And in the library there's some more books, cuz they don't have them all on Nook yet," says fourth grader, Breena Sand.

Students and teachers agree the Nooks are great for research, because the computer and the book are right in front of you.

"It's not the only source out there. That they are still the book, and there are still people to talk with. There are other resources to use," says Gunderson.

Students can sign out e-books using the Overdrive Application.

The librarian says the Nooks are only being used for class work, but as teachers and students get used to them, they could be used for leisure.
