Westhope Native Mentioned in Address

Posted: Updated:

Millions of people were watching the state of the union address from their homes this evening. However, one North Dakota native had a front row seat.

Misty DeMars originally from Westhope, North Dakota, was invited to sit with the first lady after she wrote a letter to the President.

After she moved to Illinois and purchased her first home, DeMars lost her job of eight years due to budget cuts. President Obama used parts of DeMars letter in his speech this evening when he addressed the issue of unemployment insurance.

"'We are the face of the unemployment crisis,' she wrote," the President said, referencing her letter. "'I'm not dependent on the government. Our country depends on people like us who build careers, contribute to society, care about our neighbors. I'm confident that in time I will find a job, I will pay my taxes, and we will raise our children in their own home in the community we love. Please give us this chance.'"

The President urged Congress to reform unemployment insurance to be more effective in today's economy.
