YMCA Offers LIVESTRONG Program

Posted: Updated:

A program that promotes physical and emotional wellness is helping cancer survivors get back in the game.

A new program at the YMCA teaches cancer survivors how to use exercise as a recovery tool.

"We forget that exercise has so many other benefits other than weight management. Obviously, it reduces your risk for hearth disease. You reduce the risk of developing diabetes, just being able to carry on with your daily activities," says program coordinator Lindsay Peterson.

The main goal is to help survivors regain the strength and flexibility they lost during treatment.
But the program also focuses on mental wellness and offers a supportive community.

"I really like being able to work out with other cancer survivors, because you have a feeling they can understand what you've been through.  There's a lot of support and a lot of encouragement," says cancer survivor Alex Duxbury.

Janet Masseth is a marathon runner. But she hasn't been able to hit the pavement in some time. Cancer left her sitting on the sidelines. But now, she's getting back in the game.

"My next marathon goal is to do the Vegas half in December. I'm a member of the North Dakota National Guard and I've got a lot of Guard buddies who are going to support me and join me with that one," says Masseth.

Peterson says it's about more than getting back in shape.

"It's about being able to play with your grand kids. It's about being able to carry your groceries in one trip or carry your groceries up the stairs, and just carrying on with your activities of daily living well and feeling strong enough to do so," says Peterson.

For Masseth, it was an uplifting experience.

"Just getting out here and talking with people, visiting with people, exercising has helped my mood 100 percent. I would have been very depressed without this program, very, very depressed," she says.

The LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program meets twice a week at the Missouri Valley YMCA. The program is now in it's second session.
