Gamers Create Modern Video Arcade

Posted: Updated:

Gone are the days of the video arcade. Today, those who love video games usually complete with other players online. But two Bismarck gamers are looking to change that.

Two Bismarck gamers are jumping offline to bring fellow gamers together.

"We wanted to bring back the stuff we loved as children and create a place where it didn't matter how old or new the game was, we had a place where people could come to do it," says owner Alexander Duppong.

Gamer Gauntlet is a competitive video game club started by a group of gamers back in 2012.
Duppong calls it a video game experience. The club offers open arcade nights and tournaments.
They also host a video game season.

"We have the system pick twelve games from the six genres that we categorize games into. So, you get a nice variety of games. And they can be anything from Nintendo to the modern consoles. So, you get a pretty good selection of different games from different eras," says owner Nicholas Kramer.

Each week, one player is named the winner of his league.
And at the end of the season, the ultimate gamer is crowned champion.

Josh Hohbein has been playing with the group for about a year.

"I thought that was pretty cool. And I won the first night. And from that point on, it was like, this is the greatest thing ever," says Hohbein.

In the past, Gamer Gauntlet offered some unique experiences to members, including an unforgettable Rock Band performance.

"We actually went to a local venue and we plugged into their system. So, it felt like you were a rock band. You were up there rocking out with your friends with plastic instruments, but what was coming out of the speakers was the actual music. So, you felt like you were a band. That's not something any other company would be able to offer you," says Hohbein.

Leagues play on week nights between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. The next video game season begins on February 3.

The video game season is open to people over the age of 18. And it costs $50 to compete.
