North Dakota Petroleum Council Releases Energy Survey Results

Posted: Updated:

Four out of five North Dakotans favor oil and gas development, according to a survey commissioned by the North Dakota Petroleum Council. The annual survey found that while a majority of North Dakotans favor oil development, many continue to have some concerns about the impacts in western North Dakota, including wear and tear on roads, availability of housing, and crime.

Yet the survey has received some criticism.

"Can you trust this survey because it comes from the industry. Well, we paid for the survey, but we had no role in making the phone calls and choosing who got to be done. So, that was all random sampling done by a professional firm that does this to make sure we can make this as objective and honest answers as we can," says Tessa Sandstrom, Communications manager for the N.D. Petroleum Council.

Sandstrom says survey takers conducted nearly 800 telephone interviews. Six hundred of them were with people scattered across the state, while 194 of them were people living in 19 oil and gas producing counties.
