Young Adults Hit Hard by Flu

Posted: Updated:

In health news, even for people in perfect health, with strong immune systems, it's not too late to get your flu shot.  And, if your in your 20s, 30s, or 40s, you might want to.

Like many other communities, Minot has seen an increase in flu activity, and it's young adults who are being hit the hardest. During a typical flu seasons, it's usually the very young, and very old that are most vulnerable to becoming sick. But, this year, it's the 2009 H1N1 Pandemic strain that's being spread, which has more of an effect on young adults.

"If you do get sick, especially with fever, body aches, are coughing and have a headache, you want to get into your doctor right away. It's critical that you go within 24 to 48 hours because it doesn't usually benefit the person to start an anti-viral after that," said Melissa Fettig, Immunization Coordinator for First District Health in Minot.

A person can spread the flu virus for a full 24 hours before they even show signs of being sick.
